Trump just said the quiet part out loud.

While Marco Rubio presented the campaign against the International Criminal Court as a defense of American sovereignty and US service members, Trump publicly clarified that Rubio was not trying to protect him. According to Trump, the effort was intended to defend Benjamin Netanyahu and “various other people.”

That admission should alarm anyone who believes international law is supposed to apply equally.

The ICC exists to investigate allegations of genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity when national systems are unable or unwilling to act. Yet instead of allowing the allegations against Netanyahu to be examined through a legal process, the Trump administration is trying to weaken the court, punish its officials, and pressure countries to abandon it.

Trump is not even pretending this is purely about protecting America. He openly connected the campaign to shielding Netanyahu.

When a powerful government attempts to dismantle a court because it is investigating an ally, that is not justice. It is political protection—and a message that international law applies only to the powerless.
