Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear called on former GOP Senate leader Mitch McConnell to publicly disclose his medical condition after the senator was hospitalized following a cardiac event.
McConnell, 84, was found unconscious at his Washington, D.C., residence on June 14 and required CPR, according to emergency dispatch audio obtained by multiple outlets. The hospitalization has raised questions about Republican control of the Senate and the senator’s ability to continue serving.
Calls for Transparency
Beshear, a Democrat, intensified his pressure on McConnell on Saturday through social media, stating the senator should “end the crazy speculation” and provide voters with a health update. “I’m calling on Sen. McConnell to do the same and provide voters an update on his own health,” Beshear wrote on X.
The governor had previously sent a written request to McConnell earlier in the week requesting he “fully update Kentuckians regarding the current status of your health.” Beshear cited his own calls for transparency from former President Donald Trump regarding health matters.
Conflicting Accounts
Senate Majority Leader John Thune said on June 15 that he recently spoke with McConnell and that he “sounded good,” though Thune deferred to the senator’s staff regarding his return timeline. Thune and Senate Majority Whip John Barrasso both stated they had recently discussed Senate business and Supreme Court rulings with McConnell.
However, Utah Sen. Mike Lee contradicted these accounts, stating that members of Congress remain uninformed about McConnell’s condition. “Many of us aren’t speaking about Mitch McConnell’s condition because we know nothing about his condition,” Lee posted on X in response to social media speculation.
When asked about McConnell’s status aboard Air Force One on Wednesday, Trump responded, “I have no idea how he’s doing.”
The Information Vacuum
McConnell’s office has declined to disclose the nature of his medical condition or provide a timeline for his return to Senate duties since his hospitalization. The lack of official information has fueled public uncertainty about whether he will resume his leadership role.
McConnell’s wife, former Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao, remained in Beijing following his hospitalization, where she met with Chinese Vice President Han Zheng. Her office stated the situation “did not warrant an immediate return to the U.S.”
