A confrontation between an armed individual and Secret Service personnel near a vice presidential motorcade in Washington, D.C., resulted in an officer-involved shooting that left a juvenile hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
The incident occurred at the intersection of 15th Street and Independence Avenue, according to Secret Service statements. The White House was temporarily placed on lockdown immediately following the shooting.
Secret Service Deputy Director Mathew C. Quinn indicated the armed individual was encountered just minutes after the vice president had departed the location. “The incident resulted from a confrontation between an armed individual and Secret Service Police,” the Secret Service said in a statement.
Security Concerns in the Capital
The shooting marks the second security incident involving armed individuals in Washington in recent days. The incident comes approximately one week after Cole Tomas Allen, 31, of Torrance, California, allegedly attempted to enter the White House Correspondents’ Dinner while armed with multiple weapons.
Allen is accused of attempting to reach the ballroom where President Trump was attending the Saturday evening event with Cabinet officials and journalists. “He attempted to assassinate the president of the United States, Donald J. Trump,” Assistant U.S. Attorney Jocelyn Ballantine told the court, requesting preventative detention.
The Charges
Authorities indicated additional charges against Allen are expected as the investigation continues. A law enforcement official stated that “this is the kind of situation that we cannot tolerate,” emphasizing the seriousness of security breaches in the nation’s capital.
