A retiring Republican senator pledged to block election security measures hours after the administration released declassified information about foreign interference in U.S. elections.
The Trump administration declassified materials on Thursday showing efforts by China to influence the 2020 election, including targeting swing states and directing resources to defeat the sitting president. The administration also reported that more than 250,000 noncitizens are registered to vote across four states.
Senate Opposition Emerges
On Friday, retiring North Carolina Republican Senator Thom Tillis took to the Senate floor to oppose the SAVE America Act, which would require proof of citizenship to register to vote and photo identification at polling places. “I will use every device I have available to slow down the wheels of government until people cop a clue and do the math,” Tillis said, according to his Senate floor remarks.
Tillis has made similar statements in recent months as the legislation stalled in the upper chamber. His stated concern centers on whether there is sufficient time before November to implement the bill’s requirements if it passes.
Supporters and Critics Weigh In
Polling data shows approximately 80% of Americans support election security measures of this type. However, Tillis has consistently opposed the legislation during his final months in office.
Recent reporting indicates Tillis has received approximately $700,000 in donations from industries tied to cheap labor sources. The senator did not provide further comment when asked about the contributions directly.
Broader Pattern of Opposition
The retiring senator has opposed other Trump administration priorities during his lame-duck period, including Pete Hegseth’s confirmation and Ed Martin’s full-time appointment as D.C. Attorney. Tillis is not seeking reelection.
