Secretary of State Marco Rubio said talks between U.S. and Iranian officials continued in Qatar as negotiators worked through specific language in proposed documents. \”There were some talks going on in Qatar today, so we’ll see if we can make progress,\” Rubio said during a trip to India, adding that discussions centered on technical details that would require several more days to complete.
The administration has outlined key demands for any final agreement. Iran would agree to reduce its highly enriched uranium stockpile and commit to limits on nuclear enrichment for an extended period, according to an administration official. In return, the U.S. would lift its naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz and ease economic sanctions on Tehran.
Military Tensions Amid Negotiations
U.S. military forces conducted defensive strikes on Iranian targets in the Gulf region on Monday as negotiations proceeded. Central Command said the strikes targeted missile launch sites and Iranian boats attempting to lay mines near American naval vessels enforcing the blockade.
\”U.S. Central Command continues to defend our forces while using restraint during the ongoing cease-fire,\” said Captain Tim Hawkins, a Central Command spokesperson. The strikes occurred near the Iranian port and navy base at Bandar Abbas, according to military officials.
Iranian surface-to-air missiles had threatened American warships in the area, including two aircraft carriers and nearly two dozen escort vessels. The clashes marked the most significant military action between the countries since a cease-fire took effect approximately six weeks ago.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei acknowledged progress on multiple issues but cautioned against assuming a deal was imminent. \”It is correct to say that we have reached a conclusion on a large portion of the issues under discussion,\” Baqaei said, but added that finalizing an agreement would take additional time.
