Nikki Haley Declines to Run for Lindsey Graham’s Senate Seat

Former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley will not run for the U.S. Senate seat left vacant by the death of longtime Sen. Lindsey Graham, her spokesperson said Monday.

Graham, 71, died Sunday following a brief illness at his Washington residence. His office did not disclose an official cause, though emergency dispatch audio from Saturday referenced a response for reported cardiac arrest. Graham had served in the Senate since 2003 and was a prominent voice on national security and foreign policy.

Haley’s Decision

A spokesperson for Haley told Bloomberg that the former U.N. ambassador under President Donald Trump’s first term has no interest in pursuing the special election seat. Haley, who ran for president in 2024, posted a tribute to Graham on Instagram Sunday, writing that he “loved South Carolina deeply” and “gave his all to protect America and our freedom-loving allies.”

Social media commenters beneath her post urged Haley to reconsider and run for the seat herself, describing her as “the most qualified person” for the role. Haley did not publicly address those suggestions.

Other Potential Candidates

Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., said Sunday she is open to running for Graham’s seat. Appearing on Fox News, Mace acknowledged the possibility had “crossed my mind” but emphasized her immediate focus is honoring Graham’s legacy.

“I’m never going to shut the door,” Mace said. “I love the state of South Carolina. You only live once, and you know, if the people of South Carolina would like me to serve in that capacity, I’ll certainly take a look at it.”

What Comes Next

Under South Carolina law, the governor will appoint a temporary replacement to serve until a special election is held. The special election is expected to take place in November alongside the general election, with the winner serving the remainder of Graham’s term.

Graham’s death opens a potentially competitive race for one of South Carolina’s most prominent political positions after more than two decades of his tenure.
