Elderly Democratic Rep Falls On House Floor Protesting ‘BBB’…@#@

Rep. Jan Schakowsky of Illinois stumbled on the House floor while speaking against Republican-backed tax legislation during a contentious debate Wednesday.

The incident occurred as Democrats mounted opposition to the sweeping bill ahead of a House vote. Schakowsky had been delivering remarks criticizing the measure when the fall happened during extended floor debate.

What Led to the Fall

Schakowsky’s stumble came amid a marathon legislative session as lawmakers worked to complete votes on the tax package. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries of New York had launched an extended filibuster using the chamber’s rules allowing unlimited speech.

The Democratic lawmaker had recorded a video message earlier in the day opposing the bill. “I’m not just a no on Trump’s Big Ugly Bill, I’m a HELL NO!” Schakowsky said on social media, citing concerns about healthcare coverage and wealth inequality.

The Broader Context

The incident renewed focus on the ages of members serving in Congress, an issue that intensified following former President Joe Biden’s debate performance in 2024. Schakowsky announced earlier this year that she would not seek reelection in 2026 after representing her district since 1998.

The Illinois Democrat has served in the House for over two decades and previously spent seven years in the state legislature.

The Vote and Its Outcomes

The House passed the tax legislation Thursday with a 218-214 vote, sending it to President Trump’s desk. The bill extends individual tax cuts from 2017, eliminates taxes on tips and overtime pay, and modifies Medicaid eligibility requirements.

The legislation allocates $46.5 billion toward border wall construction and projects $1 trillion in Medicaid savings over ten years through stricter eligibility rules. Former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows characterized the passage as fulfilling Trump’s campaign promises, stating on social media that the administration “delivered for the American people.”
