Three Republican candidates vying to replace retiring U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky faced off Monday night in their first primary debate, showcasing their positions on military action, immigration and support for President Donald Trump.
Rep. Andy Barr, former Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron and businessman Nate Morris are competing in the Republican primary to succeed McConnell, who announced earlier this year he would not seek reelection after representing Kentucky since 1985. The debate took place at the Henry Clay event center in Louisville as the primary campaign intensifies.
Foreign Policy and Military Authority
When asked about Trump’s military operations against Iran and Congress’s role in such decisions, Barr emphasized presidential authority. “The president has the legal authority as commander in chief to defend the country and Congress has the power to declare war, but Congress does not have the power to prevent the president from advancing our national security,” Barr said, noting he voted against a recent War Powers Act resolution.
Cameron aligned with Barr’s stance, contrasting Trump’s approach with previous administrations. “Under Joe Biden and President Obama, you had redlines and the disastrous evacuation from Afghanistan,” he said. “President Trump is about decisive action on behalf of the American people to ensure our national security.”
Morris expressed unwavering support for the president’s strategy. “I trust this president and I trust this president because of the results he’s gotten for the American people,” Morris said. “He has been so surgical, so tactical in the way that he’s gone after all these foreign governments.”
Immigration Enforcement Positions
The candidates took aggressive stances on immigration enforcement when questioned about Trump’s immigration policies. Cameron pledged to withhold federal funding from sanctuary jurisdictions while supporting deportations of violent criminals.
Morris called for a complete moratorium on new immigration. “I’ve called for a full moratorium on any new immigration until we deport every single illegal that came into this country under Joe Biden,” he said.
Barr highlighted his legislative record on border security. “I have tripled ICE funding and I’ve supported the toughest border security in history because we need to protect the American people first,” Barr said.
The Primary Stakes
All three candidates are actively seeking Trump’s endorsement in a state Trump has won decisively in recent presidential elections. The Republican primary is expected to be one of the most competitive races this year.
