White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt defended the Trump administration’s modifications to media access protocols, arguing the changes expanded transparency rather than restricted it.
Leavitt spoke at an Axios event hosted by co-founder Mike Allen, where she addressed questions about the White House’s restructuring of the daily press pool. The exchange centered on the administration’s decision to alter wire service positioning and expand credential access across multiple news outlets.
The Access Argument
Allen questioned whether the changes could result in lost historical documentation, referencing the iconic photograph of Trump taken after the Pennsylvania assassination attempt. Leavitt countered that thousands of outlets hold White House press credentials and hundreds cover the beat daily.
“Why should a single outlet have the privilege of being in that 13 person press pool every single day,” Leavitt said. “The changes we’ve made have actually created more transparency, more accessibility, and greater access for a broad variety of outlets and a diversity of journalists.”
Responding to Critics
When Allen cited a White House Correspondents Association statement asserting that government should not control independent media coverage, Leavitt pushed back. She argued that a small group of journalists should not dictate who accesses the Oval Office or Air Force One.
“There should be equal access for all outlets,” Leavitt said, adding that no outlets had been restricted. “We’ve just given more spots to more outlets and more voices.”
The Broader Context
Leavitt emphasized the administration’s approach reflects the modern media landscape. She noted the president’s nontraditional campaign strategy and said the White House was adapting coverage methods accordingly.
Data from earlier this year showed President Biden held significantly fewer press conferences and media interviews than his recent predecessors at comparable points in their terms, with only 164 compared to Trump’s 468 during the same period.
