Schakowsky’s fall came after she had spent the morning recording messages for social media, stating “I’m not just a no on Trump’s Big Ugly Bill, I’m a HELL NO!” according to her X posts. She criticized the legislation’s impact on healthcare access and its tax benefits for wealthy Americans.
The 81-year-old lawmaker’s remarks preceded a lengthy filibuster by House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, who used the House’s “magic minute” rule to speak indefinitely while remaining standing. Jeffries brought multiple binders containing excerpts of his extended speech.
Age and Scrutiny in Congress
The fall reignited concerns about the advanced age of many Washington lawmakers. The issue has drawn significant public and media attention following former President Joe Biden’s debate performance in 2024 and his subsequent withdrawal from the presidential race.
Schakowsky announced earlier this year that she would not seek reelection in 2026, ending a career that began in the U.S. House in 1998 following seven years in the Illinois state legislature.
Legislative Outcome
The House approved the tax legislation Thursday in a narrow 218-214 vote, sending the measure to President Trump’s desk. The bill extends individual tax cuts originally enacted in 2017 and eliminates most taxes on tips, overtime pay, and Social Security benefits.
The legislation includes $46.5 billion for border wall construction and implements major Medicaid changes projected to reduce spending by $1 trillion over the next decade. The passage marks a significant legislative victory for the administration six months into Trump’s second term.
