Buckingham Palace issued a statement Monday denying a false report from a Russian news organization claiming King Charles III had died.
The Russian media outlet published a fabricated announcement that replicated palace correspondence and included the monarch’s official seal. Palace officials responded quickly, stating “We are happy to confirm that The King is continuing with official and private business,” according to a statement released to state-run TASS news agency.
What Sparked the False Report
The fake announcement claimed Charles, 75, had “passed away unexpectedly yesterday afternoon,” prompting immediate action from royal communications. The forged statement mimicked the palace’s official format and presentation, raising concerns about the spread of misinformation.
Speculation about the king’s health intensified following reports that the BBC was preparing a major royal announcement. Some observers speculated the statement would address Princess Kate Middleton’s recovery following abdominal surgery, while others anticipated an update on the monarch’s health situation.
Charles’ Cancer Diagnosis
Buckingham Palace announced on February 5 that Charles had been diagnosed with “a form of cancer” after undergoing treatment for an enlarged prostate. Royal reporter Omid Scobie later clarified that Charles does not have prostate cancer, though the palace did not release additional specifics about his condition.

The palace stated that Charles commenced “a schedule of regular treatments” and was advised by doctors to postpone public-facing duties. “Throughout this period, His Majesty will continue to undertake State business and official paperwork as usual,” the statement noted.
The King’s Response
Charles addressed his diagnosis personally on February 10, releasing a statement through Buckingham Palace. “I would like to express my most heartfelt thanks for the many messages of support and good wishes I have received in recent days,” he said.
The king acknowledged the challenges faced by cancer patients, stating that “such kind thoughts are the greatest comfort and encouragement.” He expressed admiration for healthcare workers, saying his “lifelong admiration for their tireless care and dedication is all the greater as a result of my own personal experience.”
Royal Duties Continue
While Charles has limited his public-facing appearances, he continues conducting official business from Buckingham Palace. Other members of the royal family have undertaken engagements outside the residence on his behalf during his treatment period.
