A 69-year-old man remains hospitalized in critical condition Wednesday after a brutal assault near his Escondido, California residence, with a suspect facing attempted murder charges.
Escondido police responded at 2:15 p.m. to reports of an assault in progress near East Mission Avenue and Buchanan Street. Officers arrived to find the victim severely injured and arrested Thomas Caleb Butler, 32, at the scene.
The Arrest and Investigation
Butler was charged with attempted murder and held without bail at Vista Detention Facility in San Diego County. The suspect initially fled the scene but was located and apprehended by authorities within minutes.
A utility worker who witnessed the attack intervened to help restrain Butler until police arrived, sustaining injuries during the confrontation. The bystander’s actions helped prevent the suspect from escaping the immediate area.
Victim’s Condition
The 69-year-old victim was transported to a regional trauma center where he remains in the intensive care unit. His wife, Maria Garcia, told CBS 8 that medical professionals have indicated her husband faces life-threatening injuries from the assault.
Medical staff have not provided a public timeline for the victim’s recovery prospects. The case remains under active investigation by Escondido police.
