Democratic representative falls on House floor during congressional session in the chamber

An 81-year-old Democratic congresswoman stumbled on the House floor while speaking against a sweeping Republican tax cut package that passed Thursday.

Rep. Jan Schakowsky of Illinois fell during heated floor debate over what lawmakers called Trump’s major tax legislation. The incident occurred amid marathon negotiations as the House rushed to pass the bill before the July 4 recess.

What Happened

Schakowsky stumbled while delivering remarks criticizing the tax package on the House floor. The congresswoman, who announced last year she would not seek reelection in 2026, had been vocal in her opposition to the legislation.

Earlier that day, Schakowsky posted a video message on social media opposing the bill. “I’m not just a no on Trump’s Big Ugly Bill, I’m a HELL NO!” she said, adding that the measure would strip healthcare from millions of Americans.

The Legislative Battle

The House passed the tax bill Thursday on a 218-214 vote, sending it to President Trump’s desk. The measure includes permanent extensions of individual tax cuts, eliminates taxes on tips and overtime pay, and allocates $46.5 billion for border wall construction.

The legislation also makes significant changes to Medicaid, tightening eligibility rules and projected to reduce spending by $1 trillion over ten years. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries delivered a lengthy filibuster opposing the bill before the final vote.

Broader Concerns

The fall has renewed discussions about the advanced age of many Washington lawmakers. The issue gained attention following former President Joe Biden’s 2024 debate performance and subsequent exit from the presidential race.

Critics have raised concerns about physical stamina and mental acuity among aging legislators handling demanding schedules and complex legislation during high-stakes sessions.
