Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard announced her resignation Friday to care for her husband, who has been diagnosed with a rare form of bone cancer.
Gabbard shared her resignation letter on X, stating she will step down from her role in the Trump administration effective June 30. She cited the need to support her husband, Abraham, through treatment for what she described as an extremely rare bone cancer diagnosis.
What Gabbard Said
In her formal resignation letter, Gabbard wrote that she was “deeply grateful for the trust you placed in me and for the opportunity to lead the Office of the Director of National Intelligence for the last year and a half.”
She explained that her husband had “recently been diagnosed with an extremely rare form of bone cancer” and faces “major challenges in the coming weeks and months.” Gabbard said she must “step away from public service to be by his side and fully support him through this battle.”
Timeline and Next Steps
Gabbard reportedly informed President Donald Trump of her decision before publicly releasing the resignation letter Friday. Her departure marks another exit from the Trump administration’s upper ranks.
The intelligence community will begin the process of identifying a successor to lead ODNI before Gabbard’s final day on June 30.
