Two Naval aviators, Lt. Cmdr. Lyndsay P. Evans and Lt. Serena N. Wileman, both 31, died when their EA-18G Growler crashed near Mount Rainier during a routine training mission.
The aircraft went down in rugged, forested terrain east of the mountain in Washington state. Both officers were assigned to Electronic Attack Squadron 130, the “Zappers,” based at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island.
What Happened
Federal investigators are working to determine the cause of the crash. The wreckage was located at approximately 6,000 feet in steep, heavily wooded terrain a day after the incident, complicating recovery efforts.
The Navy shifted operations from search-and-rescue to recovery by Sunday after confirming both aviators had perished. Washington Gov. Jay Inslee authorized the National Guard to provide round-the-clock security at the site.
The Officers’ Service Records
Evans, a Naval Flight Officer, made history in 2023 as part of the first all-female flyover at Super Bowl LVII, honoring five decades of women in naval aviation. Wileman, commissioned in 2018, earned multiple awards including the Navy Unit Commendation Medal and Combat Action Ribbon.
“It is with a heavy heart that we announce the loss of two cherished Zappers,” said Cmdr. Timothy Warburton, the squadron’s commanding officer. “Our priority is supporting their families, our sailors, and the Growler community.”
Military Leadership Responds
U.S. Senator Patty Murray, who had previously met Evans during a base visit, described her as “a pioneering leader who broke barriers and made history,” and noted that both aviators “paved the way for generations of women who will follow in their footsteps.”
The EA-18G Growler is a $67 million aircraft derived from the F/A-18 Super Hornet and serves as the Navy’s front-line electronic warfare platform. The aircraft first arrived at Whidbey Island in 2008.
Lasting Impact
The deaths mark a significant loss for the Navy and broader military aviation community. Both women expanded the presence of female pilots in combat aviation through their service and achievements.
