Former President Barack Obama praised Hungary’s election results while President Donald Trump continued attacking Obama’s Iran nuclear deal, reigniting their ongoing political clash.
The dispute erupted after Hungary’s voters rejected the candidate backed by the Trump administration. Vice President JD Vance had traveled to Hungary before the election to support the preferred candidate, but the opposition victory prompted Obama to celebrate on social media.
The Hungarian Election and Obama’s Response
Opposition candidate Peter Magyar won the Hungarian election, defeating the Trump-backed option in a closely watched race. Obama marked the result as a triumph for democracy across Europe, writing on X that the victory represented “a testament to the resilience and determination of the Hungarian people.”
Obama framed the outcome alongside Poland’s 2023 election results as evidence of democratic strength. “It’s a reminder to all of us to keep striving for fairness, equality and the rule of law,” Obama stated online.
Trump’s Iran Nuclear Deal Criticism
Trump used a Friday appearance at the FII PRIORITY Summit to attack Obama’s 2015 Iran nuclear agreement, one of the primary policy disputes between the two former and current presidents. “That Barack Hussein Obama, he had the Iran nuclear deal. He sent two Boeing 757 jetliners. They took the seats out and they piled it with cash, like 1.7 billion of cash,” Trump said.
The president claimed the agreement endangered American security and Israel. “If I didn’t terminate it in my first term, they would have had a nuclear weapon long ago, and they would have used it on the Middle East, Israel,” Trump stated.
Trump’s War Secretary Pete Hegseth also criticized the Iran payments this month. Obama had defended the 1.7 billion dollar payment as compensation for a failed 1979 arms deal following the Iranian revolution.
Broader Political Tensions
The Hungary election clash represents the latest escalation in ongoing tensions between the two leaders. Obama has opposed Trump’s policies on multiple fronts, including redistricting efforts in various states and positions on civil rights issues.
The United States and Israel are currently in the fourth week of Operation Epic Fury, which Trump says targets Iran’s military capabilities following claims that Tehran is rebuilding its nuclear weapons program.
