Iran launched multiple ballistic missiles at a U.S. military installation in Jordan on Tuesday, marking an escalation that threatens ongoing diplomatic efforts between Washington and Tehran.
U.S. Central Command said all missiles were intercepted with no casualties or damage reported at the base. The strike occurred as President Donald Trump warned that the window for negotiated resolution with Iran is closing rapidly.
What Happened
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps fired ballistic missiles at approximately 5:45 p.m. Eastern Time, according to CENTCOM. “U.S. forces remain vigilant and at a high state of readiness,” CENTCOM said in a statement.
This represents the first ballistic missile attack on a U.S. military installation since Trump paused offensive operations last week to pursue diplomatic talks. The attack came just hours after Trump met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House, where Iran was a primary topic of discussion.
The Response
Hours after the missile strike, U.S. and Saudi military aircraft conducted strikes against logistics and weapons sites in eastern Iraq linked to Iran-backed forces. Saudi Arabia’s Defense Ministry confirmed participation in the coordinated operation with U.S. Central Command.
CENTCOM stated the targets were selected in response to more than 30 drone attacks launched by Iranian-backed militias against U.S. personnel and facilities over the previous 72 hours. “The IRGC and its terrorist proxies must cease these attacks to avoid further U.S. military response,” CENTCOM said.
Diplomatic Tensions Rise
Trump told Axios on Monday that the U.S. remained engaged in “very deep talks” with Iran but indicated patience was limited. “Not much time,” Trump said when asked about the duration of diplomatic discussions.
The missile attack now complicates those negotiations and may force reconsideration of America’s military posture in the region. The incident follows a deadly assault earlier this month when Iran targeted a U.S. air base in Jordan with missiles and drones, killing two American service members.
CENTCOM reported more than 600 attempted attacks by Iran-aligned militias against U.S. citizens and facilities in Iraq between February and April. Whether Tuesday’s strike signals isolated escalation or broader confrontation remains uncertain as the Trump administration balances diplomatic engagement with military readiness.
