Fox News anchor Bret Baier reported on the stalled SAVE America Act after President Donald Trump met with Senate Republicans to push for the legislation’s passage.
The SAVE America Act has cleared the House of Representatives three times but remains blocked in the Senate. The bill would require voters to provide proof of U.S. citizenship when registering for federal elections.
Trump’s Push in Senate Meeting
During a closed-door meeting with Senate Republicans, Trump directly called for lawmakers to eliminate the filibuster to pass the legislation. “The president demanded the Republicans kill the filibuster to pass the SAVE America Act, but that remains stalled,” according to reporting from Capitol Hill.
The president clashed with Louisiana Republican Senator Bill Cassidy during the meeting. “The president didn’t want to hear my question, interrupted me,” Cassidy said. “I’m not going to be bullied when I’m trying to get answers for the American people.”
Republican Senator Tommy Tuberville expressed skepticism about the impact of Trump’s intervention. “I don’t know whether it moved him,” Tuberville said of other senators potentially changing their positions.
Why The Bill Remains Stalled
Senate rules require 60 votes to advance most legislation past a filibuster. Republicans currently control 53 seats, meaning they need Democratic support to reach that threshold.
Democrats have blocked the bill’s advancement, citing concerns about voting access. The measure has become a focal point in the broader debate over election security and voting requirements.
The Declassified Intelligence
Trump recently released declassified intelligence alleging Chinese interference in the 2020 election. He also stated that investigations found approximately 250,000 non-citizens registered to vote across four states.
Republican lawmakers immediately seized on the declassified information to renew calls for the SAVE Act’s passage. “We are going to lose our country if we don’t pass the dadgum SAVE America Act,” Rep. Tim Burchett, R-Tennessee, wrote on social media.
Election policy expert Hans Von Spakovsky backed the legislation’s necessity. “The president is absolutely correct that the SAVE Act needs to be passed to implement universal voter ID and proof of citizenship,” Spakovsky said.
