President Trump said Wednesday he has not spoken with Senator Mitch McConnell since the Kentucky Republican’s hospitalization and has “no idea” how the 84-year-old is doing.
McConnell was found unresponsive at his Washington home weeks ago and required CPR, according to reports. His office has released minimal updates about his condition, stating only that he is receiving “excellent care” and continues to improve.
What Trump and Officials Are Saying
Trump told White House reporters he has had no contact with McConnell since the hospitalization, according to reporting from NewsNation White House correspondent Libby Dean. Other Republican senators have also expressed limited knowledge about McConnell’s current status.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune said after McConnell’s initial hospitalization that he had spoken with the senator and that McConnell “sounded good” and “wants to be back.” However, Senator Mike Lee from Utah said many lawmakers in Congress remain uninformed about McConnell’s actual condition.
Growing Calls for Transparency
Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, a Democrat, sent a letter to McConnell on Wednesday requesting he provide a full health update to constituents. “As public officeholders, we have made a commitment to our constituents to do our best to represent them and to always be transparent,” Beshear wrote.
Beshear added that clear communication about McConnell’s ability to serve is necessary given the senator’s responsibilities. McConnell’s term extends through January.
Speculation and Uncertainty
The limited information released by McConnell’s office has fueled widespread speculation about the extent of his condition and whether he can return to work. Conservative activist Laura Loomer claimed sources told her McConnell is in a “vegetative state,” contradicting earlier statements from Thune.
McConnell’s office said last week that the senator “continues to improve, and is working closely with his staff on Kentucky and Senate matters while the Senate is out of session.” The office also stated McConnell “appreciates the outpouring of support he’s receiving while he continues his recovery in the hospital.”
