During a live CNN interview, a sitting U.S. president stated his administration is actively working to influence the editorial direction of a major American news network, sparking immediate concerns about press independence.
The president called into CNN on Sunday to discuss Senator Lindsey Graham’s death. During the conversation, he told anchor Jake Tapper, “We’re trying to have CNN go on a normal path, and we’ll do that.”
Tapper did not challenge the statement. Instead, he thanked the president for his time and invited him to return for future interviews. “Well, I’m on a normal path right here, sir, and I appreciate your time,” Tapper said.
The Statement
The president’s comment explicitly acknowledged efforts to direct a news organization’s coverage. He declined to answer questions about other topics, including recent military operations in Iran, and Tapper accepted these limitations without objection.
The remark came as the Justice Department approved a major merger involving CNN’s parent company. The acquisition by Paramount Skydance of Warner Bros. Discovery requires regulatory approval that depends partly on maintaining favorable relations with the administration.
The Reaction
Social media users responded swiftly to the exchange. Critics argued it demonstrated improper pressure on a news outlet, with one commenter stating it is not the president’s role “to direct the ‘path’ any news organization follows.”
Others characterized the interaction as evidence of media control. “Admitting they are trying to control the media,” one viewer posted online.
Tapper himself had previously stated on air that CNN’s responsibility “is not to try and please the president or only report the statements he likes.” Sunday’s interview appeared to contradict that position.
What This Means
The timing of the statement raised concerns about potential leverage. A president discussing putting a network on a “normal path” while his administration holds approval authority over the network’s corporate ownership carries significant implications for press freedom.
The exchange highlighted questions about journalistic independence when business interests intersect with government relations.
