President Trump recommended that South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster appoint Lindsey Graham’s sister, Darline Graham Nordone, as the state’s interim U.S. senator following Graham’s death.
McMaster’s office announced Monday he would make the formal appointment at 4 p.m. The interim position lasts only until the Senate term ends in January 2025, unless Nordone chooses to run for a full term.
Graham legally adopted Nordone as a teenager after both their parents died in quick succession. He raised her as his own family during a formative period in his life, a bond that remained central to both of them for decades.
The Graham Family History
The recommendation reflects Graham’s 30-year Senate career and his defining personal choice to care for his younger sister during a period of loss. “This would be a fabulous tribute to Lindsey, who loved her dearly,” Trump wrote on Truth Social Monday morning.

Nordone’s appointment as interim senator recognizes that family bond and honors Graham’s character, both as a public servant and as a man who prioritized family responsibility before entering politics.
What Comes Next
The more significant race will occur when South Carolina Republicans hold a special primary next month to select Graham’s replacement for the general election against Democrat Annie Andrews in November.
The Cook Political Report rates the seat as solidly Republican. Graham’s passing does not alter South Carolina’s political landscape, and analysts expect the seat to remain under Republican control.
Candidate filing opens July 28th, beginning the formal process to replace Graham. His death also creates significant committee vacancies, including his chairmanship of the Senate Budget Committee at a critical moment for federal spending negotiations.
