President Donald Trump said Wednesday he has not spoken with former Senate GOP Leader Mitch McConnell since the Kentucky Republican was hospitalized in mid-June and has no information about his current condition.
McConnell, 84, was found unconscious at his Washington home and required CPR, according to initial reports. His office has released limited updates, stating only that he is receiving “excellent care” and continues to improve.
Trump told reporters he possessed no details about McConnell’s status. “I haven’t spoken to Mitch since he had his problem,” the president said.
What Others Have Said
Senate Majority Leader John Thune said he had spoken with McConnell and the senator “sounded good” and wanted to return to work. However, Sen. Mike Lee of Utah contradicted those accounts, saying that many members of Congress “know nothing about his condition.”
Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, a Democrat, sent a letter to McConnell on Wednesday requesting a full health update for constituents. “As public officeholders, we have made a commitment to our constituents to do our best to represent them and to always be transparent,” Beshear wrote.
Growing Questions
The lack of official information has sparked speculation online and among conservative figures about the severity of McConnell’s condition. Some social media users and activists have questioned why other senators have not provided details.
McConnell’s office said last week that the senator “continues to improve, and is working closely with his staff on Kentucky and Senate matters while the Senate is out of session.” No timeline has been announced for his return to the Senate, and his office has not released additional medical details beyond stating he is receiving appropriate care.
McConnell’s term expires in January 2025.
