Buckingham Palace swiftly dismissed a fabricated report from a Russian state-run news organization on Monday that falsely claimed King Charles III had died.
The Russian media outlet published a counterfeit statement mimicking official palace communications, complete with the monarch’s seal. The palace responded immediately to TASS news agency, stating “We are happy to confirm that The King is continuing with official and private business.”
The fraudulent announcement claimed Charles, 75, “passed away unexpectedly yesterday afternoon,” according to reports. The forged document circulated online before Buckingham Palace identified it as fabricated on March 18.
Background on King’s Health
In February, Buckingham Palace announced that Charles had been diagnosed with “a form of cancer” following treatment for an enlarged prostate. Royal reporter Omid Scobie later clarified that the king does not have prostate cancer.
The palace noted Charles began regular treatments and postponed public-facing duties on medical advice. “Throughout this period, His Majesty will continue to undertake State business and official paperwork as usual,” the statement read.
The King’s Response
Charles addressed his diagnosis personally on February 10, saying “I would like to express my most heartfelt thanks for the many messages of support and good wishes I have received in recent days.”
The king expressed admiration for cancer patients and healthcare workers, noting that “such kind thoughts are the greatest comfort and encouragement” during his treatment.
Ongoing Duties
While limiting public appearances, Charles has continued conducting official business at Buckingham Palace. Other royal family members have represented the monarchy at external events during his treatment period.
