Trump-Backed SAVE America Act Moves Closer To Passage…##

Senate Republicans revived a Trump-backed citizenship verification bill during an overnight legislative session, drawing new attention to the stalled measure.

The SAVE America Act gained momentum during a marathon “vote-a-rama” session tied to a $70 billion immigration enforcement package. The legislation prioritizes voter ID and citizenship verification requirements.

The Amendment Attempts

Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina initially sought to attach the bill to the broader immigration legislation, but included a provision banning transgender athletes from competing in women’s sports. Four Republicans-Senators Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski, Mitch McConnell, and Thom Tillis-joined Democrats in blocking the amendment.

Senator Mike Lee of Utah then offered a version without the sports provision, securing 50 votes after Collins switched her position. “With Vice President JD Vance available to cast a tie-breaking vote, we would have the votes to pass this,” Lee said, noting the measure would succeed under simple majority rules.

The Procedural Standoff

The 60-vote filibuster threshold continues to block passage. Lee described the situation as a “Zombie Filibuster,” emphasizing the bill would already be law under different Senate procedures.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune has resisted implementing a “talking filibuster” to force a vote, citing concerns about maintaining GOP unity against Democratic amendments. This resistance has created friction with the White House and Trump allies.

The Parliamentarian Dispute

Senate Parliamentarian Elizabeth MacDonough ruled the SAVE America Act cannot be included in the immigration package under budget reconciliation rules. President Trump responded by calling for her removal on Truth Social.

Some conservatives advocate eliminating the legislative filibuster entirely, while others warn such action could empower Democrats if they regain Senate control.
