Four people have been confirmed dead following a devastating mudslide near Lillooet, British Columbia, with one person still missing after search operations concluded this week, according to RCMP officials.
The bodies of three men were recovered from the mudslide site during recovery efforts. A woman’s body was also found at the location, marking the first confirmed fatality from the severe flooding and landslides that struck southern British Columbia following extreme rainfall over the weekend.
Search Operations Conclude
Rescue teams have exhausted all search avenues at the mudslide site, and operations have now been suspended. However, authorities said discussions are ongoing to determine next steps in the recovery effort.
One individual remains unaccounted for in connection with the disaster. RCMP officials are continuing efforts to identify the three men recovered and to notify their families.
The Broader Impact
The mudslide is part of a larger crisis affecting the southern region of the province, where severe flooding and multiple landslides have been triggered by heavy rainfall. The extreme weather has caused widespread damage across communities in the area.
