California Democratic Rep. Maxine Waters was shouted down by House Republicans on Tuesday after calling Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan an “insurrectionist” during debate over his bid to become Speaker.
The exchange occurred as Jordan, an Ohio Republican, faced off against House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries in the Speaker race. Waters voiced support for the Democratic candidate before pivoting to criticize Jordan, prompting loud opposition from GOP members on the House floor.
What Happened in the Vote
Jordan fell short in Tuesday’s Speaker vote, capturing fewer than the 217 votes required to win the gavel. All Democrats supported Jeffries, while some Republicans cast ballots for alternative candidates.
“We’re gonna keep going. I’ve had great conversations, great discussions with our colleagues,” Jordan said late Tuesday. “No one in our conference wants to see any type of coalition government with Democrats.”
The House reconvened Wednesday at 11 a.m. ET for another scheduled vote as Republicans sought consensus on their nominee.
Support and Opposition
Rep. Nicole Malliotakis of New York told Fox News she would continue backing Jordan and predicted his support would grow. “I think there’s some movement, and that’s positive,” she said.
However, Jordan faced criticism from Republican factions and media outlets. The Wall Street Journal editorial board issued a sharp rebuke of House GOP dysfunction, questioning the judgment of Republicans who removed the previous Speaker.
“The eight Republicans who deposed Mr. McCarthy look more foolish all the time. They didn’t have a plan for what to do next,” the board wrote.
Jordan’s Legislative Priorities
Jordan previously indicated his first official act as Speaker would focus on supporting Israel in its conflict with Hamas. “There will be some resolution on the floor to support the state of Israel,” he said, stating he would consult with House Foreign Affairs Chairman Michael McCaul.
