Late-night host Jimmy Kimmel defended his joke about First Lady Melania Trump being an “expectant widow,” saying the remark was misunderstood and had nothing to do with an assassination attempt at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner.

Kimmel addressed the controversy during his monologue on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” on Monday night, days after a suspect was arrested following a security incident at Saturday’s dinner where President Donald Trump was present. The host’s original joke about the age difference between Trump and the first lady drew criticism from the Trump family.

What Kimmel Said

“It was a very light roast joke about the fact that he’s almost 80 and she’s younger than I am,” Kimmel said. “It was not-by any stretch of the definition-a call to assassination.”

Kimmel characterized his comment as referencing Trump’s age rather than any threat of harm. He further explained the joke was about “the look of joy we see on her face every time they’re together,” adding that “they know that” was not about assassination but about natural aging.

The host acknowledged the first lady’s recent stressful experience and extended sympathy. “I understand that the first lady had a stressful experience over the weekend, and probably every weekend is pretty stressful in that house,” he said.

Kimmel’s Message on Rhetoric

Kimmel addressed broader concerns about hostile language in politics. “I agree that hateful and violent rhetoric is something we should reject,” he stated, while invoking First Amendment protections for all speakers.

He also expressed solidarity with those affected by the security incident at the dinner. “Just because no one got killed doesn’t mean it wasn’t traumatic and scary, and we should come together,” Kimmel said.

The Arrest and Charges

Cole Allen, 31, of Torrance, California, made his initial federal court appearance Monday and faces charges including attempted assassination of the president, discharge of a firearm during a crime of violence, and transporting a firearm across state lines.

According to a newly unsealed probable cause affidavit, Allen was armed with a 12-gauge pump-action shotgun and a Rock Island Armory 1911 .38-caliber pistol when arrested. Authorities said he sent a written manifesto to family members before the alleged attack describing his intent to target Trump and Cabinet officials.

In the manifesto, Allen made false accusations against the president and expressed intent to harm multiple members of the administration.
