California political figure speaks at podium with American and state flags during Julia Brownley re-election campaign event

California Democratic Rep. Julia Brownley announced she will not seek re-election after serving seven terms representing California’s 26th Congressional District.

Brownley’s decision adds to a growing wave of House retirements ahead of the midterm elections, with more than three dozen members already announcing they will not run again. Brownley is the second California House Democrat to announce her departure this cycle.

Brownley’s Statement

“Serving our community and our country has been the honor of my lifetime,” Brownley said in a statement. She highlighted her work expanding access to affordable health care, strengthening support for veterans and their families, and addressing climate change.

“With another year remaining in my term, I will continue working every day to deliver results for our region,” Brownley added. She emphasized her commitment to advancing legislation that improves lives for constituents across her district and the nation.

Brownley expressed confidence in House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries’ leadership. “I am particularly pleased that I will leave the House with Hakeem Jeffries as Speaker,” she said.

The Race Ahead

California Assemblymember Jacqui Irwin signaled interest in running for Brownley’s seat, telling reporters she was exploring a bid for the now-open position. The 26th Congressional District encompasses most of Ventura County and a portion of Los Angeles County.

Democratic Leadership Response

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries praised Brownley’s service in a statement. “Congresswoman Julia Brownley is a principled public servant and an incredible advocate for the communities that she so ably represents,” Jeffries said.

Jeffries noted her legislative achievements supporting veterans, including her leadership on the Female Veterans Suicide Prevention Act and the Deborah Sampson Act. “Rep. Brownley will be missed by the House Democratic Caucus and we wish her and her family the very best in this new chapter,” he concluded.
