An 81-year-old Democratic congresswoman from Illinois stumbled on the House floor while speaking against President Donald Trump’s tax cut legislation.

Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) lost her footing during a heated debate over the sweeping tax package that lawmakers had been negotiating to meet a July 4 deadline. The incident occurred as the House considered the expansive bill that would reshape federal tax policy and spending priorities.

What Happened

Schakowsky was delivering remarks opposing what she called Trump’s “Big Ugly Bill” when she fell during the floor debate. The moment added to ongoing national conversations about the age of Washington lawmakers, a topic that has intensified following former President Joe Biden’s withdrawal from the 2024 race.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) later launched an hours-long filibuster against the measure, taking advantage of House rules that allow unlimited speaking time so long as a member remains standing and present. Jeffries arrived prepared with multiple binders containing portions of his speech.

The Legislation

The House passed the tax bill 218-214 on Thursday, sending it to President Trump’s desk. The measure extends the individual tax cuts Trump enacted in 2017 and eliminates taxes on tips, overtime pay, and Social Security benefits for seniors.

The legislation includes significant changes to Medicaid, tightening eligibility rules in ways projected to reduce spending by $1 trillion over ten years. It also allocates $46.5 billion to complete construction of a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border, a key 2016 campaign promise.

Democratic Opposition

Schakowsky had been vocal in her opposition to the package before the fall. “I’m not just a no on Trump’s Big Ugly Bill, I’m a HELL NO!” she wrote on X, criticizing the measure for reducing healthcare access and prioritizing tax cuts for wealthy Americans.

Schakowsky announced earlier this year that she would not seek reelection in 2026, ending a career that began in the House in 1998 following seven years as a state legislator.

What This Means

The bill’s passage represents a major legislative victory for Trump six months into his second term, fulfilling key campaign promises on taxes and border security. The legislation marks the enactment of a significant portion of the president’s stated agenda.
