Tulsi Gabbard has stepped down as Director of National Intelligence, citing her husband’s diagnosis with a rare form of bone cancer.
Gabbard announced her resignation Friday through a post on X, stating she would leave her position in the Trump administration to support her husband Abraham during his medical treatment. She notified President Donald Trump of her decision before making the announcement public.
The Resignation
In her formal resignation letter, Gabbard wrote that she is “deeply grateful for the trust you placed in me and for the opportunity to lead the Office of the Director of National Intelligence for the last year and a half.” Her last day in the role is June 30.
Gabbard explained that her husband had “recently been diagnosed with an extremely rare form of bone cancer” and faces “major challenges in the coming weeks and months.” She determined that stepping away from public service was necessary to provide full support during his treatment.
What Comes Next
The resignation marks another departure from Trump’s administration in recent months. Gabbard thanked the President for giving her “the opportunity to lead ODNI” during her tenure.
