NASCAR icon Greg Biffle, his family, and three others died when their private jet crashed near a North Carolina airport during takeoff.
The Cessna C550 experienced difficulties shortly after leaving Statesville Regional Airport and attempted to return to the runway. The aircraft descended into a nearby field and caught fire, killing all seven people aboard.
What Happened
The jet departed the North Carolina airport on a routine flight with intentions to make a family visit. Moments after takeoff, the plane encountered technical issues that prompted the pilot to seek an immediate return.
The aircraft did not reach the runway. Instead, it descended rapidly and struck an open field adjacent to the airport, bursting into flames on impact.

The Victims
Biffle was a decorated NASCAR driver who competed in the NASCAR Cup Series and was recognized among the sport’s greatest competitors. His wife and their two children were among those killed in the crash.
